The Edo State Chairman of the National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria (NACDPAMN), Mr. Ibrahim Yusuf Imokha, has pledged to take decisive steps toward finding lasting solutions to the recurring clashes between herders and host communities in Ekiadolor, Edo State.
Imokha made the commitment during a stakeholders’ meeting involving community leaders, players in the cattle value chain, and the Divisional Police Officer of Ekiadolor Division at the divisional headquarters.
Speaking at the meeting, the chairman, who described himself as an indigene of Edo State, stressed the need for peaceful coexistence among residents, noting that peace and stability remain essential for the development of the state and the country at large.
He disclosed that the national leadership of NACDPAMN had proposed an animal tagging initiative aimed at addressing cattle rustling and curbing criminal activities, including kidnapping.
According to him, the association would compile a comprehensive register of herders operating within the community, while proper means of identification would be issued to livestock owners to enhance security and accountability.
In his remarks, the Senior Special Adviser to the NACDPAMN President on Special Duties, Comrade Kabiru Sani Garko, expressed condolences to families of victims affected by recent crises in the area.
He also commended the host communities for accommodating northerners living and doing business in the state, assuring that the concerns raised at the meeting would be conveyed to the national leadership of the association.
Garko further revealed that arrangements were already underway for the establishment of cattle ranches across parts of the country, explaining that the persistent movement of cattle from one location to another had contributed significantly to clashes between herders and farming communities.
He noted that the ranching initiative would drastically reduce conflicts and improve security, adding that some herders had also fallen victim to kidnapping and other criminal activities.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Eyean Cattle Market, Alhaji Idris Adanno, appealed to members of the host communities to remain patient, assuring them that efforts were being intensified to resolve the issues amicably.
Similarly, the Sarkin Fulani of the area, Alhaji Muhammad Sosa, appreciated the understanding shown by the communities and pledged to work closely with the Edo State leadership of NACDPAMN to sustain peace and harmony in the area.
